Keppra (Levetiracetam)

Uses:

  • Commonly used to treat
    • seizure

Advantage of this medication:

  • No major side effect
  • Available by oral and injection form
  • Cost: generic available, covered by most insurance

Dosing

  • Most commonly used forms: 500, 1000 mg tablet
  • Usually taken twice a day
  • Kidney disease:
    • Mild kidney disease: no change in dose is needed
    • CrCl less than 30: use a lower dose, such as 500 mg twice a day
    • CrCl less than 15: up to 500 mg once a day
    • Hemodialysis patients: dialyzable 50%. 500 to 1000 mg after dialysis.

Side effects:

  • Over 10%
    • increased blood pressure
    • behavioral problem
    • infection
    • weakness
    • nasopharyngitis
